The 'gathering room', we call it that because people seem to gather there.
The hand hewn log walls and the stone fireplace have a mystical sense about them. The logs were hewn at some point prior to the Civil War, (probably in the 1840's) from a virgin forest stand of Yellow Poplar trees.
As we worked with the logs to coax them to fit together, it was necessary from time to time to saw a bit off. This exposed the rings. We were able to count nearly 150. WOW! 150 years old when cut in 1840, plus the time 'till now.......close to 300 yr old wood!!! Incredible! No wonder there is something that happens when one runs his/her hands over these beautiful logs. I often think of the lives that have been absorbed into the wood, forever to remain a mystery.
